ADHD

I think Reina may be destined to inherit a little ADHD...not from me mind you, Bill can take full credit for those genes. Now that she has discovered her fists, ceiling fans, even TV, she has difficulty concentrating on her #1 job, finishing a bottle. She'll smile up at me, blow bubbles and coo, thinking she's just sooo cute. Well, she is, but I'm a little biased. I'm told this is normal for babies and will only get more pronounced as she becomes more and more social and interested in her world. I guess I won't be looking to put a pinch of Ritalin in those bottles yet!

big baby belly, she doesn't seem to have suffered from under eating
Reina with buddy Logan (5 months), check out his choke hold! We're going skiing with him and family this week in Montana. Daddies are already there. We miss you Daddy!

Pot O' Gold

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
Although there's no Irish heritage anywhere in our family, Reina and I have started the day off right, tea for me with some gaelic music and Reina's bottle was "irished" up. Just kidding. Or am I? She slept 12 hours last night...

Anyway, it's been awhile since I posted some photos:

Heigh Ho

Heigh ho, heigh ho, it's off to work I go....

So this week I started back to work. Baby steps at first, just 2 four-hour blocks, however it was still a little rough. Bill stayed home in the mornings with Reina and I was home by noon, exhausted even though I hadn't really done anything. Since I'm orienting to a new department I just did administrative odds and ends as well as some observation. In any case, I found myself looking at her pictures on this blog during the mornings and resisting the urge to call and check up on them. Bill and Reina did fine, I guess I did too. It was weird though. I really missed her though, even over that short period of time.

This week I have a 12 hour shift, which will be interesting to see if Bill gets anything done at home...on most days especially early on I was lucky just to shower by noon! Bill has already successfully managed a pooptastrophe and has gotten over his phobia of bathing her as well (she was "too slippery" before). The plan is for me to continue to work on Bill's day's off. Hopefully all will go well and Bill won't feel like we have to look into daycare. Ick.

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Today is my Dad's birthday and since he needs his baby fix about every 7-10 days or so, we'll be seeing him soon. In the meantime, Reina has a message:

babies make great gifts!

That Guy

"that guy": (noun) a colloquial expression referring to an individual, usually male, who makes a spectacle out of one's self in public. May knowingly or be unaware of one's status as that guy. "Get a load of that guy"; "The drunken college student didn't realize it wasn't appropriate to dance in the middle of the lecture, he was that guy."

Now that Reina and I are going out into the world I am discovering the hidden "joys" of parenthood. Parenthood apparently turns you into "that guy" whether you like it or not. You don't get a vote. It is a decision entirely up to the kid. This week I have been inducted into that guy status twice:

On Wednesday night, I brought her to my cooking class, scheduled 6pm to 9pm. Bill was working and I can't bring myself to get a non-family member babysitter as of yet. The class coincided perfectly with what has become her bedtime, 8:30pm, so I anticipated probably having to leave early, or risk being that guy. I really didn't want to however, both because I had paid to take the class and because I was taking it with a friend.

Reina only fussed a little in the first half of class, getting to the boiling point which was solved by stuffing a bottle in her mouth. Throughout the rest of the class, however, she was an active participant, peeping in the way only she can her approval or disapproval of the chef's selections.

It could have been way worse, the chef who taught the class commented on how good she was. Throughout the class I had to ward off kindly intentioned cooking store ladies who offered to hold her saying "we've all been there." In any case, due to the missed bedtime, Reina chose to have meltdowns every 90 minutes until 1am that night. She sure showed me!

The second episode of that guy-dom for me came late this week when we went to the grocery. Reina usually falls asleep and stays asleep once in her car seat, alas, not during this trip. I tried my best to nonchalantly pick through apples and peppers while a tiny person wailed in her car seat in the shopping cart. Did anyone notice I had a screaming baby on my hands and had only started shopping? Nah, no one hears that..."I'm not listening, la la la, not listening!" Finally, I took her out of the seat and carried her football style through the rest of the store. Ever push a shopping cart one handed? They don't exactly turn on a dime. Ultimately, I put her back in the seat while checking out, her wails competed with the 2 year old boy's in the next aisle, glad to know what to look forward to! How can such a little being be such a tyrant?

I'm sure I have countless more that guy adventures in my future. What strikes me as funny is how many parents I see all the time in the same position. Trying to get stuff done, screaming kid, trying to act like it's no big deal. I think they are mortified but no one else actually cares. I hope.

I'm preparing to join the ranks.
